Discussion on Theatre Photography

The original purpose of theatre photography is to document theatre art. But when does photography transcend this purpose and become independent, an artwork in its own right? What does theatre photography tell us about the performance and what does it reveal about the photographer, their subjective view?

What happens when two art forms intertwine, when one depicts the other? How do we combine the unique and unrepeatable action of a performance in the here and now and the capture of a moment in a photo for eternity?

The Maribor Theatre Festival will present two exhibitions of theatre photography – Damjan Švarc in Maribor Art Gallery and Tone Stojko in SNG Maribor Mezzanine. The opening will be accompanied by a talk about theatre photography – Breda Kolar Sluga, museum consultant at Maribor Art Gallery, will talk with the photographers.
